Bee-gathered pollen is increasingly consumed around the
world because of its purported nutritive and therapeutic values. Although rare,
ingested pollens can induce severe adverse reactions, particularly in allergic
individuals. These risks are exacerbated by the fact that products sold as “bee
pollen” are made up of variable content, making them difficult to characterize
and standardize. Until recently, several case reports reviewed by Jagdis and
Sussman have described anaphylactic reactions after ingesting bee pollen
supplements.
