Bee venom for skincare? Some swear by it. Here's what doctors say. (USA TODAY)

Bee stings aren't fun. For those who are allergic, they can be deadly.

But... can bee venom make you beautiful?

Some online insist it can, touting products containing derivatives of bee venom. Dermatologists, however, tell USA TODAY that bee venom doesn't rank high on their list of skincare ingredient recommendations. For starters, it can be very harmful to those with allergies. Also, there needs to be more research done on its supposed benefits, which they say can be achieved with more well-studied ingredients.

Study Shows Bee Venom Inhibiting Cancer Cells

Bee venom and thymoquinone combination inhibits cancer cells by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis

Natural products have gained significant interest in cancer therapy. Thymoquinone (TQ), a bioactive compound mainly derived from Nigella sativa seeds, and bee venom (BV), a complex mixture of bioactive components secreted by honeybees (Apis mellifera), are notable examples. This study aimed to evaluate the synergistic anticancer effects of TQ-BV combination on selected cancer cell lines—HeLa, MCF-7, HCT—and normal human skin fibroblasts (HSF). BV was collected using a novel remote-controlled extraction device designed to maintain venom purity by isolating it from environmental contaminants and minimizing light exposure. HPLC was used to quantify the main components of the venom, thereby detecting the sample’s purity. MTT assays assessed cell viability. Apoptotic activity was analyzed through Annexin V-FITC/PI staining. Flow cytometry was used to evaluate the cell cycle distribution, focusing on the Sub-G1, G1, and S phases in HeLa cells. Results from the MTT assay showed that the TQ-BV combination showed markedly increased potency against HeLa cells with an IC50 value of (1.495 ± 0.198 µg/mL). Combination Index (CI) analysis confirmed a synergistic effect in all cell lines. The apoptosis assay revealed an increase in both early and late apoptotic cells with the combination treatment in HeLa cells, which exhibited a notable rise in late-stage apoptosis, indicating enhanced apoptotic activity. Cell cycle analysis revealed that the combination appeared to induce arrest at the G1 and S phases, which may have contributed to reduced proliferation. Overall, the TQ-BV combination exhibited strong anticancer potential by inducing cell cycle arrest and promoting apoptosis. The high purity of BV, achieved through an optimized extraction method, may have enhanced its efficacy. Further in vivo studies are needed to confirm these findings and explore potential clinical applications.

On this occasion of World Bee Day, celebrated annually on May 20th, we, the Asian Apicultural Association (AAA), urge all member countries to unite in global efforts to protect pollinators, safeguard food security, preserve biodiversity, and enhance human health. This day serves as a global reminder of the indispensable role bees and other pollinators play in sustaining life on Earth, and it calls upon us to redouble our efforts in safeguarding their future.

Bees are the unsung heroes of our ecosystems and economies. They pollinate over 75% of the world’s leading food crops and 90% of wild plants, ensuring biodiversity, food security, and livelihoods for millions. In Asia, a region rich in agricultural diversity, the contributions of bees are even more pronounced—from the rice paddies of Southeast Asia to the apple orchards of the Himalayas, their labor underpins our food systems and cultural heritage.

Yet, bees today face unprecedented threats. Climate change, habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and disease outbreaks are pushing pollinator populations to the brink. In Asia, rapid urbanization, deforestation, and unsustainable agricultural practices exacerbate these challenges. As stewards of this vital resource, the Asian Apicultural Association stands committed to fostering collaboration, innovation, and awareness to reverse these trends.

Tanzanians urged to adopt bee venom as a natural alternative for boosting immunity


GEITA: TheTanzania Forestry Service (TFS) has urged Tanzanians to adopt bee venom as a natural alternative for boosting immunity against both infectious and non-infectious diseases.

TFS Senior Conservator from the Silayo Tree Plantation in Geita District, Mr Juma Mdoe made the recommendations recently in an exclusive interview with the ‘Daily News.’

Mr Mdoe said that scientific research has shown that bee venom contains various compounds that, when introduced into the human body, can help strengthen the immune system.

“Some major components of bee venom are melittin, apamin, hyaluronidase, phospholipase and histamine.

“When bee venom compounds are injected into the body, may stimulate, activate and boost the immune, which helps to fight diseases,” he said.

Bee Venom Therapy in Mexico


NACO, Sonora, Mexico — The throngs of people waiting to get stung by bees here outside Jose Miguel Sobarzo’s home office are buzzing with anticipation.

The patients — or clients — come from his hometown here in Naco, Sonora, from as far away as California and Colorado for the chance to get a bee placed on their back, neck or arm so they can feel the relief released from the insect’s toxins.

Sobarzo’s patients swear by the ancient therapy. They say it helps with everything from arthritis, to diabetes, to lack of memory and energy.

Turkish first lady Emine Erdogan on Friday received the Dr. Beck Apitherapy Award for promoting bee products for medicinal purposes.

She hosted the International Apitherapy Federation's executives at the Vahdettin Mansion in Istanbul.

At the reception, Janos Kormendy-Racz, head of the Hungarian Apitherapy Association, presented the award to Erdogan for her contributions to the dissemination of apitherapy studies in Türkiye.

“This award is half Turkish, half Hungarian. The person you see in the picture has made great contributions to the use of bee products in the field of medicine and to the development of bee studies. I hope that it will be an occasion for us to go further in Turkey as well,” Kormendy-Racz said...

Bee Venom Therapy Popular in Sudan

From inside his small shop in souk in the centre of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, Abdullah Al-Sarraj was able to make bee stings an "effective and rapid treatment" for people who are suffering from chronic diseases.

In the shop with its own distinctive buzz, Hamza grabs forceps and gets to work with the bees. He says treatment by bees was mentioned in the Quran and everything that comes from the stomach of bees is healing, including the honey and wax, but he says even the venom from their sting can heal.

He says he uses the bees' sting to treat ailments by inserting them into specific sites on a patients' body depending on the disease being treated, adding that the "stings relax the nerves".

Al-Sarraj is considered one of the oldest therapists of this type of alternative medicine in Khartoum.

Bee venom contains "a treatment for about 140 diseases, because it contains organic, non-chemical medicinal substances that do not cause side effects," says Al-Sarraj.

Propolis, Royal Jelly, and Bee Venom May Help Treat High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)

Apitherapy combination improvement of blood pressure, cardiovascular protection, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory responses in dexamethasone model hypertensive rats

Hypertension-induced ventricular and vascular remodeling causes myocardial infarction, heart failure, and sudden death. Most available pharmaceutical products used to treat hypertension lead to adverse effects on human health. Limited data is available on apitherapy (bee products) combinations for treatment of hypertension.

This study aims to evaluate the antihypertensive effects of combinations of natural apitherapy compounds used in the medical sector to treat a variety of diseases. Rats were assigned into six groups consisting of one control group and five hypertensive groups where hypertension (blood pressure > 140/90) was induced with dexamethasone. One of these groups was used as a hypertension model, while the remaining four hypertensive groups were treated with a propolis, royal jelly, and bee venom combination (PRV) at daily oral doses of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mg/kg, and with losartan 10 mg/kg.

The PRV combination at all doses decreased arterial blood pressure below the suboptimal value (p < 0.001), and PRV combination treatment improved dexamethasone-induced-ECG changes. The same treatment decreased angiotensin-II, endothelin-1, and tumor growth factor β serum levels in hypertensive rats. Additionally, PRV combination improved histopathological structure, and decreased serum levels of NF-kB and oxidative stress biomarkers. We concluded that PRV combination therapy may be used as a potential treatment for a variety of cardiovascular diseases.

Bee Venom May Help Treat Prostate Cancer


Formulation, characterization and cellular toxicity assessment of a novel bee-venom microsphere in prostate cancer treatment

Bee venom (B.V.) is a toxin produced naturally by honey bees with several toxic and therapeutic efficacies. It is used in the treatment of different cancer kinds like renal, hepatic, and prostate cancer. Due to its protein nature, it is degraded in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Colon-targeted drug delivery systems represent a useful tool to protect B.V. from degradation and can be administered orally instead of I.V. infusion and traditional bee stinging. In the present study, B.V. loaded enteric-coated cross-linked microspheres were prepared by emulsion cross-linking method. Percentage yield, entrapment efficiency %, swelling degree, and in-vitro release are evaluated for prepared microspheres. Free B.V., optimized microspheres formula (F3), and doxorubicin cytotoxic effects were tested by MTT assay. Results concluded that free B.V. was more effective against the growth of human prostate adenocarcinoma (PC3) cells followed by optimized microspheres than doxorubicin. But both free B.V. and doxorubicin have a cytotoxic effect on normal oral epithelial cells (OEC). According to flow cytometric analysis, the optimized microsphere formula induced apoptosis and reduced necrosis percent at IC50 concentration. Furthermore, microspheres did not affect the viability of OEC. These results revealed that microspheres have a degree of specificity for malignant cells. Therefore, it seems that this targeted formulation could be a good candidate for future clinical trials for cancer therapy.

Bee Venom Helps Treat Diabetic Heart Dysfunction


Bee venom ameliorates cardiac dysfunction in diabetic hyperlipidemic rats

High levels of blood glucose and lipids are well-known risk factors for heart diseases. Bee venom is a natural product that has a potent hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects.

The current study aimed to determine the bee venom effects on cardiac dysfunction compared to combined therapy of metformin and atorvastatin in diabetic hyperlipidemic rats. The median lethal dose of bee venom was estimated, and then 50 adult male albino rats were categorized into five groups. One group was fed a standard diet and served as a negative control, while the other groups were given nicotinamide and streptozotocin injections to induce type 2 diabetes.

After confirming diabetes, the rats were fed a high-fat diet for four weeks. The four groups were divided as follows: one group served as a positive control, whereas the other three groups were treated with bee venom (0.5 mg/kg), bee venom (1.23 mg/kg), and combined therapy of metformin (60 mg/kg) and atorvastatin (10 mg/kg), respectively, for four weeks.

Upon termination of the experiment, blood samples and heart tissue were obtained. Administration of bee venom using both doses (0.5 and 1.23 mg/kg) and combined therapy of metformin and atorvastatin revealed a significant decrease in the concentrations of glucose, total cholesterol, triacylglycerol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, troponin I, creatine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase activities.

Moreover, a significant decrease had been detedcted in malondialdehyde, nuclear factor-kappa-β levels, and relative mRNA expression of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 and galectin-3 in heart tissue compared to the positive control (P < 0.0001). Furthermore, there was a significant increase in bodyweight levels of insulin, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total antioxidant capacity in heart tissue compared to the positive control (P < 0.0001).

The results indicate that bee venom can ameliorate cardiac dysfunction through attenuating oxidative stress and downregulating the NF-κβ signaling pathway.
